Design of Water Distribution and Storm Drainage Systems for a Private Community
Project Overview
Streams Tech Ltd. Designed a comprehensive water distribution and storm drainage system for the proposed Police Officers’ Housing Society (POHS) in Barua, Dhaka. The project aimed to provide reliable water supply and effective stormwater management for approximately 100,000 residents, ensuring adequate firefighting capacity, sustainable water distribution, and climate-resilient drainage infrastructure.
The assignment included the design of 11.8 km of water mains, 5 production tube wells, 134 control valves, 61 fire hydrants, and 10.8 km of storm sewer lines, supported by advanced hydraulic and stormwater modeling.
Study Components
Data Collection and Site Evaluation
- Collected project boundary data, proposed road layouts, building footprints, road surface elevations, population and demand estimates, pump curves, and well characteristics.
- Assessed existing water distribution and drainage conditions in the project area.
Hydraulic and Water Distribution Modeling
- Developed a detailed hydraulic network model to size pipe diameters, simulate flows, and optimize network performance using WaterGEMS and WaterNAM software.
- Conducted fire-flow simulations, valve positioning analysis, hydraulic sensitivity tests, flushing, and water hammer analysis.
- Designed interconnected water mains restricted from external connections, ensuring system independence.
- Incorporated provisions for future connection to surface water transmission mains.
Stormwater Drainage Modeling
- Developed a geospatial Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) under synthetic storm conditions with a 4% annual exceedance probability.
- Derived storm hydrographs using Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) relationships for Dhaka Division.
- Designed storm drainage elements including sewers, conduit junctions, and outfalls.
- Conducted scenario planning to evaluate flood inundation risks and optimize drainage layouts.

Deliverables
- Water distribution network design: 11.8 km mains, 5 PTWs, 134 valves, 61 hydrants.
- Storm drainage network design: 10.8 km sewer lines with optimized layout.
- Hydraulic models for water distribution and stormwater drainage.
- CAD drawings and GIS layouts for construction and implementation.
- Comprehensive design report documenting methodology, analysis, and outcomes.
