Engineering Design for Sanitation Infrastructure for the Rohingya Refugee Camps

Project Overview

Streams Tech Ltd. (JV Lead, Bangladesh) in partnership with Streams Tech, Inc. (USA) was contracted to design three intermediate fecal sludge transfer networks (IFSTN) for the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. The initiative aimed to strengthen sanitation services by creating durable, cost-effective infrastructure for fecal sludge collection, transfer, and treatment, ensuring service sustainability for at least ten years post-installation.

Study Components

Data Collection and Site Evaluation

  • Conducted extensive topographic surveys to identify feasible transfer routes for IFSTN pipelines.
  • Defined desludging zone boundaries and allocated intermediate sludge collection sites.
  • Collaborated with humanitarian organizations during surveys to ensure alignment with ongoing relief efforts.

Hydraulic and Engineering Design

  • Performed hydraulic analysis of network components for a 10-year design horizon, following client guidelines.
  • Designed three FSTPs with associated transfer networks tailored to camp layouts and host community needs.
  • Established desludging zones to optimize collection efficiency and minimize operational costs.
  • Integrated cost estimates for both capital and operational expenditures to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Prepared engineering drawings, layouts, and BoQs for installation and operation.
  • Developed GIS and CAD databases of surveyed and designed networks.

Deliverables

  • Delineated desludging zone boundaries for each camp cluster.
  • Engineering designs and drawings for three IFSTN systems.
  • BoQs and cost estimates for installation and operation.
  • GIS and CAD databases of surveyed networks.
  • Comprehensive project reports (inception, survey, draft final, final).
