Public Water Supply Technology Mapping for 44 Districts

Project Overview

Streams Tech Ltd. was contracted by the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) to prepare geospatial water technology maps for 44 districts under the Village Water Supply Project (VWSP). The initiative addressed the challenge of diverse hydrogeological conditions and contamination risks across rural Bangladesh, where multiple water supply technologies coexist within single administrative jurisdictions.

The project created a comprehensive inventory of water points (WPs), mapped contamination levels, and identified suitable water supply technologies, providing communities and policymakers with reliable, updated information to guide safe and sustainable water supply planning.

Study Components

Data Collection and Validation

  • Designed and validated a structured questionnaire in consultation with DPHE.
  • Collected and compiled data from DPHE and secondary sources.
  • Organized district-level validation workshops to ensure accuracy, fill data gaps, and disseminate findings to local DPHE offices.

Mapping and Analysis

1. Prepared region-specific GIS maps for:

  • Water supply technological options with priority ranks.
  • Chemical contamination (arsenic, iron, chloride).
  • Lowest groundwater table levels.

2. Developed hydrogeological sections and lithologic profiles using Hydro GeoAnalyst software.

3. Entered validated data into DPHE’s online water supply portal.

Deliverables

  • Water supply technological option maps for 44 districts.
  • Chemical contamination maps highlighting arsenic, iron, and chloride levels.
  • Updated lithologic profiles at the smallest operational zone level.
  • Comprehensive compiled database and GIS shapefiles.
  • Project reports (inception, interim, final).

Stakeholder Engagement and Knowledge Transfer

  • Conducted workshops across districts to validate data and engage local DPHE staff.
  • Provided training and support for data entry into the national water supply portal.
  • Ensured findings were accessible to both policymakers and local communities.
